this is the collected photography of nicholas aegon whitish.
i'm a 20-something european photographer, designer and architect in the making.
illicit.blue, specifically its photography section, is an experimental approach to creating a website that relies on visual/explorative experience more than on the usual intellectual paradigm of explicit, written communication. the curated but minimal interface is supposed to let visitors (and myself) develop a more critical, yet stimulating reading of the artwork. if you feel lost in the blue, try the lifebelt icon on this page.
q: what kind of camera do you use?
a: currently i alternate between two analog rollei 35's for casual and a panasonic lumix gh5 with various manual lenses for more dedicated shots.
q: why are some of the pictures so heavily edited?
a: some of the pictures on this site are quite old. i tend to be more subtle nowadays, but they are what they are. no picture can ever be unprocessed.
q: can you take a picture of my mom/my cat/my house?
a: if they make interesting subjects, why not. mail me!
q: are you on instagram/facebook/flickr/myspace/google circles/club penguin/etc.?
a: no.
are you interested in putting one of the pictures up on your wall? for most of them it should be possible (but ask before you design your entire living room around it). use the contact form to let me know the name of the photo and the size you want and i'll see what the production/shipping costs would be. throwing in a little extra for me is optional, but welcome : )
except for the two animated colour gradients, music in the videos and some pop culture quotes, all media on illicit.blue, specifically all photos, are intellectual property of nicholas e. whitish and can only be used with written permission.
i strongly recommend using illicit.blue with a desktop pc and a good internet connection. it's not optimized for mobile devices.
the photography site has 4 distinct modes that let you browse the pictures differently (the pool of images is always the same)
click the icon at the top of the page to cycle through them:
displays photos in the order they were taken, starting with the youngest and getting older the further you scroll to the right. use the arrows at the bottom right to go even further in the past. use the buttons below the images to see their names, birthdays and other meta.
here, photos are distributed into seven rough thematic categories and sorted according to when they were uploaded (making this the best mode to stay up to date with new content) use the arrows below the picture to browse through older ones. click the icons at the bottom to switch genre.
each photo has a characteristic colour. use the big queer button to show random pictures with the same colour. it'll disappear when you've seen all of them – use the buttons at the bottom to switch colour.
lets you find pictures you already know the name of. hit enter to make a query.
if this doesn't answer all of your questions, or you have feedback regarding the site, feel free to send me a message with the contact form, i'll answer asap!
